From Word of Wisdom Literature by Jane Birch
Beginning in the 1830’s and lasting 100–150 years, the most common place to find writings and speeches on the Word of Wisdom was in Latter-day Saint newspapers and magazines. In the articles below I share some highlights. (I will add more later.)
Hyrum Smith (1800–1844), and his magnificent 1842 sermon on the Word of Wisdom
19th Century Latter-day Saint Church leaders
More 19th Century Latter-day Saint Church leaders
President Heber J. Grant (1856–1945)
19th and Early 20th Century Counsel on Meat
Elder Joseph F. Merrill (1868–1952), and the most vegetarian Latter-day Saint Conference address, “Eat Meat Sparingly.”
W. Dean Belnap, M.D. (born 1926) and his article: “Self-Punishment,” Improvement Era (1951).
Ray G. Cowley, M.D. (1919–1997) and his article, “An 1833 Guide for the Prevention of Heart Disease,” Improvement Era (1969).
G. Craig Kiser, “A Principle with Promises,” (February 2014). The first article in a Church magazine to mention The China Study (the Bible of plant-based eating).
Paul H. Peterson, “The Sanctity of Food: A Latter-day Saint Perspective,” in Religious Educator 2, no. 1 (Provo, UT: BYU Religious Studies Center, 2001). This is one of my favorite articles on the Word of Wisdom!
