Latter-day Saint Children Share Their Perspectives

Three SistersWhole food, plant-based eating is not just for adults! Children being raised in WFPB families have their own experiences with this way of eating and their own ideas about the Word of Wisdom. Here three young children from Oklahoma share their perspectives.

Heavenly Father wants us to eat bread and peas and cantaloupe. And we can eat pineapple and white beans. We should not eat cheese.

We don’t eat meat because meat is not good for us. It has sugar in it, maybe? My favorite thing to eat is peas, carrots, and cucumbers with hummus. I also like raw cinnamon rolls, snack bars, sweet potato fries, and kale chips.

I wish I could eat the treats in my nursery class. I should tell them it has sugar in it, and they could do a puzzle instead.

Sally is 3 years old. She loves to take care of her babies, ride her bike, and eat.

We are vegan so that we don’t get cancer and so we don’t get sick. The Lord wants us to eat things that are healthy. The Word of Wisdom says to not eat cows.

My favorite things to eat are beans, rice, and corn, enchiladas, barbeque tofu pizza, grilled cheez, and quesadilla [all made without dairy]. The hardest part of being vegan is I really like candy, and I don’t get to usually eat it. I’m glad we’re vegan because I don’t like cheese, and I wouldn’t like chicken and ham! I will be vegan when I grow up.

Elaine is 5 years old. She loves to play with play-doh, go to pre-k, and dance.

We are vegan because my grandpa got diabetes, and my grandma found out it was because of too much meat and dairy. Heavenly Father wants us to eat grains, fruit, and vegetables. I feel good when I follow the Word of Wisdom. My favorite meal is hashbrowns and French toast made with tofu instead of eggs.

When it is red ribbon week [a drug prevention campaign], I will tell my teacher that in my church, we don’t drink hot drinks such as tea and coffee— even grown-ups don’t do it! And I hope they are happy to hear that!

Mariah is 7 years old. She loves to draw, dance, and read.

  1. Sally, I’m so very glad to learn that you are eating vegan, because I know like you do that is the way Heavenly Father wants us to eat! I wish I had begun to eat the way you are eating now when I was three years old instead of waiting until I was just turning 80.

P.S. You are so very pretty!

    Elaine,

I’m very glad to learn that you are eating vegan, because that is the way Heavenly Father wants each of us to eat! I wish I had begun eating the way you are now eating when I was five years old instead of waiting until I had just turned 80!

P.S. You are very pretty also!

Mariah, I am 82 years old. You said your Grandpa had diabetes. I also had that too, but now that I’ve finally learned to eat like you do I don’t
have that any more! Maybe I can even live many more years now that I finally learned to eat like you and your two younger sisters do which is just like you and I know that is how our Heavenly Father and Jesus want each of us to eat!

I’m glad that you wrote: “When it is red ribbon week [a drug prevention campaign], I will tell my teacher that in my church, we don’t drink hot drinks such as tea and coffee— even grown-ups don’t do it!” I hope your teacher will be happy to hear that!

P.S. You and your two younger sisters are so very pretty and are each very wise in the way you eat! I’m so very proud of each of you. I’m glad that you are going to tell your teacher that you and even your parents don’t eat foods Heavenly Father told us not to eat! You and your dear sisters must have very special parents!

  2. You three children have beautiful, bright, healthy eyes and smiles. Thank your mommy for that!

Hi Sally! I like your favorite foods, too. I’m glad your mommy is teaching you to eat the yummiest foods instead of Nursery snacks. Yes, they aren’t good for you. Maybe you could ask your nursery teacher to bring apples or bananas instead. That’s what I bring for my Primary class.

Hi Elaine! Mexican food is the best! Yummy! I’m so happy for you that your Mommy makes it without fat, cheese, or meat. I eat beans every day and enchiladas a couple times a week. I hope you keep your goal of staying vegan when you grow up. You will have more energy and better health than those who eat animals.

Hi Mariah! I love french toast too, but am allergic to wheat and soy. Waaaah! Still, I can eat lots of yummy hash browns made without oil. I’m glad you teach your classmates and teacher that coffee and tea are also drugs. Not many people pay attention to that fact and are addicted to caffeine. It’s not good for their bodies. If you keep up eating only whole plants, you won’t get diabetes like your grandfather. You probably won’t get sick too much. You will be strong and beautiful. Young people that don’t eat animals and oil have lovely, shiny hair and usually don’t get acne.

Good work Mom of Sally, Elaine, and Mariah!

  3. Hi Sally, Elaine and Mariah,

It is amazing that you are learning to take such good care of your bodies while you are young. Most of us take much longer to figure out what Heavenly Father wants us to eat.

I am proud of you for being good examples even when it is hard.

Your beautiful smiles make me happy.

    Love,
    Grandma Orva
